“Easy to dream a dream though it is harder to live it” – Wale

Cross Culture

11 Jan

As the skateboarding scene was once known to be an underground sport and the crowd who participated were typically considered “outcasts” who indulged in punk and new wave music. Civilians typically viewed “skaters” as  criminals…while this was often not the case. Skaters were/are typically very independent people in their thinking…hence why NO RULES exist in the sport .

The skate scene over the past years has made leaps in bounds culturally. The hip hop world did not accept the skate culture for many years…however, more recently the skate culture has influenced the hip hop circle and vice-versa. The famed rapper Lil’ Wayne a.k.a. as “Tunechi,” is one icon who has aided to enable the skateboarding mass  to become more mainstream and has also empowered the hip hop and skate cultures to co-exist. Lil’ Wayne’s  fashion over time has geared more toward an overall “skater” look… Skinny jeans, skate shoes ( Supra’s, Nike SB & Vans), pocket chains and skating across stage in concerts are just a few ways this rapper mixes the cultures together.

Aside from Lil’ Wayne’s influence on the hip hop world, Jay-Z began bringing these two cultures together back in 2004 when he put together a collaboration album and tour with the rock group Lincoln Park, called” Collision Course.” This was a new sound to both the rock/skate and hip hop crowds, the sound was accepted widely by music heads and also gave the “stamp of approval” to fans in both sectors that they could be “down” with one another.

More recently in music, drummer Travis Barker, from the punk group ‘Blink 182′ released a Hip-Hop mixtape. Barker features a variety of rappers such as  Kanye West, Too Short, J Cole, and Lil’ Wayne to name a few. In this case the “skate head” punk rock drummer decided to twist his community and style to be geared toward the hip hop group.

Not only have the cross of cultures allowed for a larger audience in both the punk/rock and hip hop families to expand, it has also allowed for the prejudices against one another to disembark. Simply put…what is more awesome than people coming together?
